Ivan Drago, a Russian fighter, does irreversible damage to Rocky Balboa in the ring, forcing him to retire. After the Drago fight, Balboa returns home to find that his accountant has stolen and lost the riches he had amassed as the heavyweight champion on the stock market. After his boxing career ends, Rocky starts training a young fighter named Tommy Gunn. But Rocky is unable to match the lavish salaries and dazzling gifts that other bosses in the area are offering Gunn.
