Diana is a senior anthropologist at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., where the movie is set in 1984. She lives a tranquil existence, yet she periodically dons the Wonder Woman costume to uphold justice and save lives. The narrative opens with the introduction of two major characters: Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal), a charming and ambitious businessman with his own aspirations for power, and Barbara Ann Minerva (Kristen Wiig), a socially awkward gemologist who befriends Diana.
