The narrative opens in the enchanted Smurf village, where the smurfs have a contented and tranquil existence under the leadership of Papa Smurf (voiced by Jonathan Winters). But after finding their village, the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria) pursues the Smurfs via a magical portal that takes them to modern-day New York City.
