The protagonist of the tale is Bolt, a white German Shepherd who plays the role of the dog superhero in a well-liked TV show. Unknown to Bolt, his owner Penny (voiced by Miley Cyrus) is only an actor, and the skills he thinks he has on the show are actually special effects. Bolt, on the other hand, believes Penny is actually in danger and that everything on the show is true.
