The film continues the multiple storylines established in the previous two movies. Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) and Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin) continue their perilous journey to Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring. Gollum (Andy Serkis) becomes increasingly obsessed with reclaiming the Ring and attempts to manipulate Frodo and Sam.
