The events of the first movie are promptly followed in this one. After the destruction of the One Ring in Mordor, Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) and his faithful companion Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin) resume their quest. The Uruk-hai, a breed of strong orcs, have captured Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd). Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) are tasked with rescuing them.
