The protagonist is high school student Light Yagami, who comes across a strange note known as the "Death Note". By putting someone's name in this note and picturing their face, the user can kill anyone whose name and face they know. Light makes the decision to use the Death Note to purge the world of criminals and create a utopian society in which he will rule as "Kira."
