Jodie Foster portrays Clarice Starling, an FBI trainee who strives to succeed in her career while concealing her West Virginia origins, which, if known, would instantly label her as a backward or white trash person. She hopes to work for the agency in the Behavioral Science Unit under Jack Crawford's (Scott Glenn) direction after graduation. Crawford urges her to examine Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Sir Anthony Hopkins), a psychiatrist who has been imprisoned for eight years in maximum security isolation as a serial killer who cannibalized his victims, while she is still a trainee.
