Two rival magicians read each other's diaries, which reveal the details of their personal lives and magic tricks, in this story set in Victorian-era London. Looking back to the period when the diaries were written, we see that both magicians became fixated on their adversary's greatest trick. Although the audience witnesses the same feats, neither magician is able to decipher how the other does them.
