The protagonist of the tale is Philippe, an affluent nobleman who is crippled and in need of care. A young man from a low-income family named Driss applies for the job, but he doesn't really think he will be hired. He is shocked to learn that his unconventional methods and abilities to show Philippe no mercy have led to his hiring.
