Beginning on June 6, 1944, with the Allied invasion of Normandy, soldiers from Cpt. Miller's 2nd Ranger Battalion battle ashore to establish a beachhead. Two brothers are slain in battle during the fighting. One of the brothers is KIA; the other is from New Guinea. All three of the grave telegrams are to be delivered to their mother, Mrs. Ryan, on the same day. After learning of a fourth brother, Private James Ryan, the US Army Chief of Staff, George C. Marshall, decides to send out eight men (including Cpt. Miller and a few members of the 2nd Rangers) to locate him and return him home to his mother in an attempt to ease some of her grief.
