A dismal future has seen the breakdown of the American economy, resulting in high rates of unemployment and criminality. The government, which is currently run by the strong business Terminal Island Penitentiary, has created a violent amusement known as the "Death Race." In this lethal match, inmates compete in a high-stakes automobile race in which they have to not just outrun but also completely destroy their rivals.
