Evey Hammond is a common citizen of the United Kingdom in the far-off future, when the country is ruled by the despotic and fascist Norsefire Party. She works for the government-owned British Television Network, but before long, she and a mysterious, legendary freedom fighter identified only by the letter "V" rise to become the state's greatest enemies. Evey is first hesitant to the notion, but they quickly become close after V tells her that she must spend at least a year hiding in his underground cave.
