In the dystopian future depicted in the story, prisoners are kept in a vertical building known as "The Hole" or "The Pit." Two prisoners are housed on each floor of the institution, and a platform with an abundant spread of food lowers through the levels, pausing briefly on each floor. The amount of food decreases as the platform drops, leaving the prisoners on the lower levels with very little or nothing at all. The convicts at the upper levels are allowed to eat as much as they like.
