Teddy Daniels, a young American marshal, is tasked in 1954 with looking into the disappearance of a patient from Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. For personal reasons, he has been pushing for an assignment on the island, but soon he believes that hospital doctors, whose extreme therapies range from immoral to unlawful to downright evil, are using him in a dark scheme. Teddy's astute research techniques quickly yield a promising lead, but the hospital denies him access to documents that he believes would reveal crucial information about the case. Teddy starts to question everything as a cyclone cuts off contact with the mainland, more dangerous felons "escape" in the chaos, and the inconsistent, perplexing signs mount up. He starts to doubt his recollection, his partner, and even his own sanity.
