The movie opens with former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan), who hopes to represent India in international wrestling and win a gold medal. But cultural expectations and a lack of encouragement compel him to abandon his dream. Unfazed, he makes the decision to teach his daughters to realize his unrealized goal.
