"2001" narrates an evolution tale. Someone or something pushed evolution forward in the distant past by erecting a monolith on Earth (and perhaps elsewhere in the universe, too). After that, evolution brought humanity to the moon, where they discovered another monolith, this one serving as a signal to the monolith placers that they had advanced that far in their evolution. Humanity now needs to have the courage to come into contact with the monolith placers with the help of artificial intelligence (like HAL). If it works, we'll have reached the next stage of evolution, whatever that may be.
