James Franco's character Aron Ralston is the center of the narrative. Ralston is stuck while exploring the isolated Blue John Canyon in Utah after a boulder tumbles and jams his arm up against the side of the canyon. Unable to break free, Ralston must fight a bloody battle both mentally and physically to survive while dealing with the harsh reality of scarce supplies and solitude.
