Aspiring boxer Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) wants to train with Frankie Dunn (Clint Eastwood) so she may learn from the greatest. He states up front that he has no interest in training a girl and firmly declines. Frankie has few acquaintances and lives a solitary life, estranged from his only daughter. Although Maggie has a tough exterior, she perseveres in the ring and eventually wins him over. Maggie not only turns out to be the fighter he's always wanted to train under him, but she also ends up being a friend who helps him make up for all the gaps in his life. Maggie's career takes off, but she needs one more favor from Frankie after an incident in the ring.
